May 13
K – 3rd graders are going to visit the Deanna Rose Farmstead on May 13th. We will be leaving school around 10:45. When we get to the Farmstead we will be eating our sack lunches. (Make sure you send a sack lunch with a drink for your child.) After lunch we will be taking a tour of the animals and flower gardens. We will be leaving the Farmstead around 2:00 and returning to school about 3:30. Those that usually ride the school bus home will need to be picked up by a parent.
May 19th
The students and I have been discussing Play Day and what events they would like to be in. We will be making a decision as to what events each student will be in soon. I will then send home a list and a schedule that tells when each event starts. The students like to have their parents and grandparents watch their events!
Play Day will be on Wednesday, May 19th. It will be from 9:00 until 2:00. We will need sack lunches and drinks or money to buy lunch at the concession stand. Don’t forget the sun block!!!

Classroom News
We have been working very hard this last 9 weeks, not only with our class work, but the 3rd graders also completed their Kansas State Assessments in both reading and math. They all did a good job!
In math class, the 2nd graders have been working on regrouping with 3-digit numbers in both addition and subtraction. We have been practicing a lot, so we are getting better at it. 2nd graders are also working on arrays, finding the perimeter of shapes, writing whole and mixed numbers, giving back change for $1.00, and some easy multiplication.
The 3rd graders have been working with prime numbers, regrouping with 3-digit addition and subtraction, using a scale to find distance on a map, doing division problems, and adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers on a number line.
The 2nd graders have been reading two true stories about some famous American women airplane pilots. One the women was Ruth Law and the other one was Amelia Earhart. Both of these women were very courageous and flew planes when it wasn’t a popular thing for a woman to do.
The 3rd graders have been reading a funny story called “The Armadillo from Amarillo”. It is an amusing story about an armadillo that decided to explore the world. During his trip he sent postcards to his relatives back home and told about all the wonderful things he was seeing and doing.
In Science we have been studying about animal habitats and biomes. Included in our study so far we have learned about deserts and rain forests. Next week we will be learning about wetlands, grasslands, tundras, and coral reefs.
Both classes have been trying to improve their cursive writing skills.
